PhD offer: Dynamical study of mechanical metamaterials for ultrasonics

Context

The FEMTO-ST Institute (Franche-Comté Electronique Mécanique Thermique et Optique – Sciences et Technologies, UMR 6174), is a joint research unit, placed under the quadruple supervision of the University of Franche-Comté (UFC), the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), of the École Nationale Supérieure of Mechanics and Microtechnology (ENSMM) and the University of Technologie Belfort-Montbéliard (UTBM).

Description

The goal of the thesis will be to go beyond the state of the art by manufacturing 3D mechanical metamaterials and measuring their « meta » properties in the dynamic and nonlinear regime, typically in the MHz range. Potential long term applications are, for example, the design of ultrasonic transducers suitable for radiation in water or for cranial box imaging. The project will combine the unique expertise of the FEMTO-ST Phononics and Microscopy group in characterization, fabrication, modelling and design.
